Why AMO? – Relationship & Empathy in Psychotherapeutic Practice
AMO, which means “I love” in Latin, is the motto of my Scottish family clan, the Scotts. In a therapeutic context, AMO represents a set of core values that supports work with relationships, attachment, and emotional regulation in psychotherapy.
Compassion, empathy, and unconditional acceptance are central to establishing a safe therapeutic alliance—a relationship that research has repeatedly shown to be crucial for therapeutic effectiveness. AMO serves as a guiding principle for how I approach each client: with presence, respect, and a fundamental recognition of the client’s subjective experience.
In my work as an ID Psychotherapist, the AMO principle is applied to create a stable, non-judgmental therapeutic space where clients can explore emotional states, relational patterns, and inner conflicts. This approach supports the development of greater self-awareness, emotional tolerance, and opportunities for psychological integration and healing.
